We are delighted that the second issue under the guidance of the new editorial team engages significant issues in Indian politics and policy. These include COVID-19 management, the decline of institutions such as the judiciary and the election commission, coalition politics, and India’s democratic consolidation, and the roots of welfarism in China, India, and Turkey. This volume also deliberates on policies and legislations that have engendered instruments such as the citizenship identification marker christened as the “Aadhaar card” and the infamous electoral bonds scheme, which was declared illegal by the Indian Supreme Court in 2024. Some papers engage with the issue of political management. Others deal with the question of how an autocratizing executive interferes with the institutions of the state, and how the paucity of checks and balances comes with severe human costs.
